Personality:

Leo was the kid that everybody knew, that got invited to everything. He was a soccer star, kind of a big shot, with agents having scoped him out, tracking his progress on the field. He was going to college and then play soccer professionally for whatever club would take him on. Leo is the guy that had everything going for him. He’s a natural leader, got a good take charge, never say die attitude, and the world was his oyster.

Until he got cancer.

Leo was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, which is a cancerous tumor in the leg and it had gotten bad to the point of needing amputation. He has been at Ocean Park Hospital longer than any of the other members of the Red Band Society (except for Charlie) and his natural leader abilities, the confidence, the ability to motivate others, to encourage them, took a backseat once he lost his leg.

The loss of his leg and his hair from the chemo really hit him hard, and then the fact that the relationship that he’d started with Emma went sour and Leo just went off the rails a little bit.
It wasn’t until Jordi Palacios showed up and was going through some of the same stuff that Leo himself had gone through that he really started coming back out of the shell again. He saw in Jordi someone that he could mentor, share the experiences of having to lose a leg and deal with all that rehab and chemo and the adjustments that you have to make when you lose a limb. And then Jordi got to keep his leg and Leo struggled a lot with that. It’s never easy to see someone getting exactly what you always wanted and his reckless streak shows in his coping method of sneaking out of the hospital to go to a frat party across the street from the hospital, wearing the prosthetic that he’s not used to yet.

Leo’s got a natural easy way of talking to people, he’s good at encouraging them. His time in the hospital has given him a compassionate streak a mile wide. And he’s got a deep appreciation for some of the smaller things in life, like seeing Emma smile at him, hold his hand. Or jamming with Dash and Ruben.

He’s only sixteen though and the fact that the girl he loves can’t make up her mind between him and the new kid bothers him more than he’ll let on. He’s jealous of the things that he can control because there’s so much there that he has no control over. His test results, or whether the chemo will work, if he’ll have to go through more surgery. If Emma will choose him over Jordi or if he’s going to have his heart broken.

Adjusting to Teleios is going to be strange at first. There’s no Nurse Jackson around to keep him in line and he’s not sure if the medical facilities will be able to handle his condition if something goes wrong. But he likes the city and the fact that no one knows him here, so he can be whoever he wants to be and there’s no one to call him on it. No one who’s known him with both legs so they don’t wince whenever they see him again. It’s a new start and that’s kind of cool.

And it’s not the same boring walls of the hospital, it’s all new and waiting to be explored.
